A Buea-based NGO,
Footsteps for Women and Children -Cameroon (FOWEC- CAM), last August 9,
assembled over 60 adolescent boys and sensitized them on the importance of
peace in ensuring sustainable development
The seminar,
which held under the theme “Engaging Children and Youths in Peace Building and
Non- violence through sports”, was described by local administration officials
in attendance as timely- considering the devastating effects of the current Anglophone
Crisis
According to Mrs.
Yuven Juliana Muna, Founder/Chief Executive Officer of FOWEC-CAM, her
organization, created in 2016 and legally registered in 2017, has as overall
goal the promoting of Human Rights and the empowerment of women and children. “It is
a newly created organization that focuses on the education of children and
girls or children and girls’ education…,” she stated.
Mrs. Muna added that
the NGO’s areas of intervention include: protection of women and children’s
rights, economic empowerment of women and girls, as well as environmental
education.

But the seminar and a
football match by the young attendees, which took place on that day were placed
under the NGO’s program, baptized “The Young Stars’ Academic program”. She said
it aimed at identifying and developing children’s talents for the
in promotion of peace and sustainable development.
Mrs. Muna, who
encouraged the youths to strive to become at all the times development agents,
reminded them that they are all leaders of tomorrow.
She told them that
peace building is not just for the elderly but for the youths who constitute
the majority of Cameroon’s population.
Local government
officails who presented papers during the seminar were Mr. Njiwah Augustine
Ndam, Buea Sub- delegate for Sports and Physical Education, who said sport, is
a tool of promoting peace and non-violence in our communities. Njiwah
emphasized that peace building starts from the home. “Once there is peace
in the home there will be peace in the society,” he said. “Where there is sport
there is unity, where there is sport, there is no racism…”
Also speaking was
representative from the Divisional Delegation of Youth Affairs and Civic
Education, Mr. Ekwelle Hansel, who based his presentation “Children and youth
responsibility in promoting peace and nation building.” Mr. Ekwelle said
peace leads to infrastructural development, stability, safeguard of life and
property, unity among people. He recommended to the youths ways in which
they could promote peace which include; organizing seminars and sensitizing
people on peace, volunteerism, advocacy and creation of peace clubs in schools.
Mr. Ekwelle also urged youth to use social medial as a tool in promoting peace.
This seminar
was followed by a display of peace and anti-no-violence messages.
A youth
football match supervised by Coach Edimo Njoke Joseph and the award of prizes
to seminar participants, graced the ceremony.
Mrs. Muna who holds a
post-graduate diploma in Human Rights and Peace Building, hailed ANUCAM
Education plc, Southwest Development Authority, BICEC Buea, among others for the
success of the event
