Dr. David Njie Makongo, a Cameroonian living and working in the USA, has announced his plan to construct in the near future a multi-million Francs ultra-modern football academy in his native town of Buea,to develop and expose young talents fit for the global market. .
The news was broken last Saturday August 31 in Bokova- Buea by Massoma Armstrong kinge, who represented Dr. David Njie Makongo at the closing ceremony of a football tournament for youth of the BONAVADA Area in Buea Subdivision, sponsored by the latter.
BONAVADA is a development association of some 13 villages along the slopes of Mt Cameroon in Buea subdivision and Dr. Makongo hails from Bova, one of the villages that make up BONAVADA, whose current president is Dr. Mbome Njie Victor.
The two-category soccer tournament, which began on August 3 and ended on August 31, was baptized "Dr.Makongo Bonavada Youth Tournament".
Some eight male teams and six female teams competed for the trophies and cash prizes, with Bokwai Ladies beating Bonakanda United by 4-2 in a post-match penalty shootout at the finals to emerge the champion in the female category. In the male category, Wonyamoka FC (upper Bokova) defeated its challengers Bwinteva United
The Recorder learned that Dr. Makongo has already made a request for a piece of land from the chiefs of the Bonavada region and is now only waiting for its allocation to kick start the construction of the football academy next year. He is also planning to construct the orphanage in the same region.
The news of the construction of the academy was received with thunderous applause both by dignitaries, and the Bonavada community that turned-up for the ceremony.
The first edition of the Dr.Makongo Bonavada Youth Tournament football tournament this year came barely one after the same Dr. Makongo launched a scholarship program for Bonavada university students to encourage academic excellence.
Last Saturday's football finals was presided over by Deputy Mayor of Buea ,Lyonga Ngange,who together with Mbua Emmanuel Mbua, president of the tournament's organizing committee, commended the support Dr. Makongo has ,this far, been giving to the Bonavada Community.
Dr. Makongo's launched the tournament "to foster unity among Bonavada youth, keep them usefully occupied during this long vacation and help develop and expose young talents in the community", The Recorder learned.
The chiefs of the Bonavada area are said to be so happy with their illustrious son Dr. Makongo for assisting in various ways towards the development of the Bonavada area.
It is worthy of note that, two male orphans of Bonavada area who just passed the GCE Advanced Levels were publicly presented during the ceremony as having been placed under full university sponsorship by Dr.Makongo, also cited as an as international a philanthropist.
