President Paul Biya, yesterday July 2, signed a
decree convening the Electoral College for Cameroon’s Municipal and Parliamentary
elections this year
Both
elections are now scheduled to take place on September 30, beginning from 8:00 am
to 6:00pm
The convening of the electorate follows the
extension of the mandate of municipal councilors by three months.
Paul Biya, in a presidential decree of June 26 extended by
three months the mandate of municipal councilors who were elected in July 2007
for a five-year period. When their five -year-mandate ended in July 2012,
President Biya initially extended it by one year, which is expected to end this
July.
According to the June 26 decree, the mandate of
municipal councilors has been further extended by three months with effect from
August 1
The electoral law empowers the President to extend
for up to 18 months such mandate, if deemed necessary. . The extension of the
mandate of municipal councilors followed that of MP’s, which was also extended
by two months.
The convening of the electorate has automatically
brought to an end voter registration.
